Jared Verse explains what makes the Rams defensive line so special

The Los Angeles Rams have one of the best young defensive lines in the NFL. Jared Verse is the star, but the rest of the line features an eclectic group like Braden Fiske, Kobie Turner, Byron Young and the veteran Poona Ford. This unit (minus Ford, who only joined the Rams this offseason) combined for 28.5 sacks in 2024 and terrorized opposing offensive lines toward the end of the season. How did all four players accomplish this shared feat with just combined years of NFL experience? Verse says it's because all four have different traits that blend well together and that the whole group knows how to work off each other's strengths. 'Everybody has their own attributes, their own little things that make them a great rusher," Verse told CBS Sports last week. "Fiske is so twitchy, Kobie's so strong. BY's so fast. I'm just a really strong dude. We all have attributes of each other and when we're together, we excel. It's like when you're cooking, a bunch of stuff by itself ain't really good . But when you throw it together, it's the best thing you've ever had.' The one element they missed the most was run-stopping, though. Enter Ford, who is known as one of the best in the league. His inclusion in the defense line has been highly touted all offseason and his veteran leadership cannot be discounted, either. The Rams will need their ascending defensive line to anchor a defense that lacks firepower in the second and third levels. But with this group, they're on the right path. LOOK: Colts' DE Laiatu Latu training with 2024 NFL defensive award winner

Indianapolis Colts' defensive end Laiatu Latu has spent some time working with the 2024 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, Jared Verse, this offseason. The two pass rushers have the same private defensive line coach, Ed McGilvra. Latu was the first defensive end selected in the 2024 NFL draft, and Verse went a few picks later at 19th overall to the LA Rams. Verse finished the regular season with 77 quarterback pressures, which was the fourth-most among all defensive ends. Advertisement Verse also finished 10th in PFF's pass rush productivity metric, and he was sixth in win rate as well. Latu finished his rookie season with 38 pressures, which were the second-most on the Colts' defense, but ranked 47th overall. However, a reason for optimism that a Year 2 leap is coming is that Latu ranked 27th in win rate. Oftentimes, when there is consistency, the production will follow. Latu and the defensive front as a whole should also benefit from Lou Anarumo's more aggressive and disguise-heavy defense, which can provide more time to get home after the Colts were often picked apart by the quick passing game last season. Advertisement "This year, I really want to shave off those milliseconds of where I'm getting to the QB because I felt that," Latu said on Tuesday, via Locked on Colts. "Like a lot of times, my head and my hands I was right there. So really just shaving off those milliseconds and knowing when I can fall back inside, and when they're working off power. So there's a lot of stuff I've been getting better at." This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: Colts' DE Laiatu Latu training with Rams' Jared Verse
